Workshop “When Old Media were New Media”

The Media and Cultural Studies Program (KBM) at UGM organized a workshop entitled “When Old Media Were New Media,” conducted by visiting professor, Prof. Eva Warth. The workshop was divided into two parts: Part 1, “Writing as Technology, Printing Press, Typewriter,” held on Thursday (12/5/2023), and Part 2, “Film and Photography,” held on Tuesday (16/5/2023). Approximately 50 participants attended this workshop, which comprehensively discussed the development of media studies.

In the first part, Prof. Eva introduced the history of media as a specific epistemic approach. Through the provided readings, she also explored the early discourse on written/textual media, which was relatively newer compared to oral/spoken communication.

As for the second part, the discussion delved deeper into a historical approach through the medium of photography and film. In this workshop, all participants were invited to revisit renowned theorists such as Walter Benjamin and Susan Sontag. Through these readings, participants were encouraged to understand the shifting perspectives on reality, immersion, and virtual reality in relation to new media.
