Concluding the Course with a Reflection on Democracy from Local, Transcultural, and Transnational Perspectives with Dr. Arie Sujito

On May 26, 2025, students of the Master’s Program in Media and Cultural Studies took part in a field lecture titled Closing Session of the “Locality, Transcultural, and Transnational” Class, held at Sanggar Maos Tradisi, owned by Dr. Arie Sujito, a lecturer in the program. The event featured Dr. Sujito as the main speaker and served as a significant moment to discuss the relationship between locality and democracy within the context of political sociology. The discussion touched on issues such as the affirmation of marginalized groups, gender justice, and centralistic bias in the practice of democracy in Indonesia.

In his presentation, Dr. Arie Sujito invited students to view democracy through the lens of local experiences and values, including how cultural symbols present in everyday life often carry political meaning. Students were also encouraged to understand that pluralism is not a threat, but a potential force to strengthen participatory and just democracy. This session marked the conclusion of the class and offered new insights into the importance of position and perspective when analyzing democratic practices in Indonesia.
