Doctoral Program

The graduates of the Doctoral Program are prepared to be experts, researchers, practitioners, and entrepreneurs in the media and cultural fieldwork who have theoretical, critical knowledge, and practical operational implications.

Education Process and Period

The doctoral program is planned in six (6) to ten (10) semesters or three (3) to five (5) years of study with 48 credits.

Academic Calendar:
• Semester I: early August - late January
• Semester II: early February - late August

All lecture activities carried out by program participants are jointly prepared by a team of promoters and study program managers. The promoter team is chaired by a professor or a lecturer with a doctoral degree (chief lecturer). All dissertations that will be tested must have gone through a Turnitin plagiarism check with a maximum similarity of 20%.

Tuition Fees

  • Tuition fees for domestic students, by personal or by sponsors, is Rp15.500.000,00 per semester.
  • Tuition fees for foreign students are approximately $2,200 per semester.

Curriculum

The Doctoral Program uses a by-course program system, which has a lecture system in class and a tutorial system along with reading materials and literature. The courses are tailored to the interests or themes of each student's dissertation. For the doctoral program lecture system, students are given an assignment in the form of directed reading and independently search for literature to be reviewed and then discussed with the supporting lecturer.

The lecture system in class is organized in a structured manner. It consists of coursework, such as classic lectures, discussions, tutorials, etc.), including compulsory subjects and elective courses (which are adapted to each dissertation research).

  • Semester I: Students are required to take 3 (three) compulsory courses.
  • Semester II: Students are required to take 3 (three) courses supporting the dissertation theme. The courses are directed according to the dissertation topic.
  • Semester III: Students begin to compose a dissertation proposal with direction from the promoter team. Students are expected to have conducted a dissertation proposal seminar and carried out a comprehensive exam. The proposal seminar is an open forum to get suggestions and input for enriching the proposal draft. While the comprehensive examination is conducted behind closed doors to get the status of a doctoral candidate.
  • Semester IV: Research implementation
  • Semester V: The Result Seminar Phase I, where students present temporary research results in front of the promoter team and the head of the doctoral study program.
  • Semester VI: The Results Seminar Phase II and Dissertation Assessment. Students presented their research results openly to get suggestions and input from the seminar participants. Students are also expected to have entered the dissertation assessment stage by the assessment team.
  • Semester VII: Students enter the dissertation eligibility stage before the dissertation examination is carried out.

Attitude

Students have a critical attitude, respect differences, and social sensitivity to forms of unequal power relations in all aspects of daily life, both in the private and public spheres.

Knowledge

Students understand in-depth theories and concepts of media and cultural studies fieldwork and use them to examine various media and cultural practices with critical paradigms and interdisciplinary approaches.

General Skills

Students can carry out research work and community service and can create and develop roadmaps for research and community service with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches that are critical and emancipatory oriented and side with disadvantaged groups.

Special skill

Students can express their sensitivity and critical attitude towards forms of unequal power relations in everyday life in various forms of academic and non-academic works and have an active role in interdisciplinary dialogue at local, national, regional, and global scales.

Students enable to theorize cultural and media phenomena, explain theoretical concepts that occur in everyday life, and generate new theorems for related phenomena.

Courses

Compulsory Courses
Compulsory courses consist of theoretical and research methods courses. The students must be master the compulsory courses to become academic or professional experts in media and cultural studies fieldwork. The students are required to take 3 compulsory courses (9 credits).

Elective courses
This course is a subject adapted to each student's dissertation research. The students are required to take 3 elective courses (9 credits).
