The Department of Media and Cultural Studies (KBM) at UGM published a new book entitled “Kapitalisme Digital dan Ekonomi Berbagi” (Digital Capitalism and the Sharing Economy) in April 2023. This book is a collection of 10 articles written by students and alumni of the Master’s and PhD programs of KBM, discussing various forms of digital capitalism. Some of these ten articles also delve into the concept of the sharing economy as one of the derivative concepts of digital capitalism. As a concept, the sharing economy, also known as the platform economy, is closely intertwined with digital capitalism, even though the act of sharing in the economy is a historical phenomenon as old as economic history itself. Meanwhile, digital capitalism, also referred to as platform capitalism and data capitalism, among others, is manifested in the sharing economy.
