MoA Signing with UM and Exploring Potential Collaborations with USM

On May 22 and 25, 2024, the Media and Cultural Studies Program Universitas Gadjah Mada (KBM UGM) visited the Academy of Malay Studies of University of Malaya (APM UM) and the Anthropology-Sociology Department of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Fourteen members of the KBM academic community, including seven master’s and doctoral students as well as seven staff and faculty members, participated in a series of activities at these two institutions.

At the University of Malaya, the KBM UGM academic community was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Sabzali Musa Kahn, Dean of APM UM, who signed a cooperation agreement for joint activities in the form of seminars and colloquiums. The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was witnessed by Professor Ir. Dr. Kaharudin Dimyati, the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at Universiti Sains Malaysia. Additionally, KBM UGM and APM USM explored the possibility of further cooperation such as joint publications and joint coursework.

During KBM UGM’s inaugural visit to the Anthropology-Sociology Department at USM, the KBM team received a warm welcome from Assoc. Prof. Premalatha Karupiah, Prof. Chin Yee Whah, Dr. Boo Harn Shian, Dr. Mohd Khairuddin Mohad Shallehuddin, Dr. Por Heong Hong, and Dr. Muh. Febriansyah. On this occasion, KBM introduced itself by presenting its background, vision and mission, and academic focus. Considering that many of the research areas in USM’s Anthropology-Sociology Department overlap and even intertwine with KBM’s research fields, it was decided that the two institutions would review and explore potential future collaborations. “We will send the MoA format from USM later,” said Dr. Boo Harn Shian to Adhani Juniasyaroh Emha, the coordinator for research and collaboration at KBM.
