In a significant move to promote innovative research among its students, the Master of Media and Cultural Studies Program held a thesis grant selection on January 31, 2025, through Zoom. This program focuses on providing support to Master of Cultural and Media Studies students in conducting research.

The selection process, which took place from January 18 to 30, 2025, was participated by students of class 2023. One of the participating candidates was Abd. Haris Nusa Bela, who presented his research titled “Crossing Reality: Queer Gaze Remediation in the Boys Love Thailand Series Love Sick (2014) and Love Sick (2024).” Her work explores the representation of queer identities in popular media, contributing to discussions on gender equality and cultural representation.

The selection committee consisted of two reviewers, Dr. Henny Indarwaty from Brawijaya University and Dr. Catur Nugroho from Telkom University. Their expertise in cultural and media studies provided valuable insights during the evaluation process, ensuring that the selected research was in line with the program’s commitment to encourage critical and innovative scholarship.

During the presentation, Abd. Haris expressed the importance of his research in understanding queer gaze in the context of the Boys Love Thailand series. He emphasized how these narratives challenge traditional gender norms and contribute to broader conversations about gender equality and representation in media. Her work not only addresses cultural phenomena but also highlights the importance of equal access to diverse narratives in the media landscape.

After a rigorous selection process, Abd. Haris was announced as the recipient of a thesis grant, which will provide funding for his research. This support affirms the program’s dedication to empowering students to explore critical issues related to climate, gender, and cultural representation through their academic work.

Abd. Haris’ successful thesis selection not only marks the beginning of his academic journey but also serves as an inspiration for other students to pursue innovative research that addresses contemporary social challenges. The program hopes to continue encouraging a culture of research excellence and social responsibility among its students.

As the world faces issues of climate change and gender inequality, the role of cultural studies is becoming increasingly important. The Master of the Media and Cultural Studies program is committed to equipping its students with the tools to analyze and address these challenges through their research.

In conclusion, the thesis grant selection held on January 31, 2025, is a significant step towards promoting innovative research in cultural studies.
