The Master’s Program in Media and Cultural Studies (KBM) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a workshop titled “Not All Meanings Are Created Equal: Narrative Techniques in Moving Image” with Prof. Dr. Eva Warth, professor emerita from Ruhr-Universität Bochum, on Tuesday (May 7) at the Graduate School Meeting Room A, UGM. Open to KBM students and staff and limited public participants, the first session discussed narrative theory and the challenges of applying it in visual media, including the concept of cause and effect, binary oppositions, and examples of narratives in advertisements that reproduce gender stereotypes.
The second session focused on aspects of mise-en-scène such as setting, costume, lighting, and cinematographic techniques in building visual storytelling. Using examples from popular films, Prof. Eva demonstrated how camera angles influence narrative. The discussion was interactive with high enthusiasm from participants and concluded with an introduction to the next session’s materials and an assignment.
